Any Starbucks partner who wants to improve his or her essay-writing skills.
Each workshop is different because each workshop is tailored to the needs of the participants. Past workshops have covered topics such as getting started, essay organization, making your writing more visual and powerful, being original, rewriting, and finding a strong thesis. Come prepared to work on the areas in which you want to improve.
You work at a Starbucks store so you know that space is limited. Jay wants to make sure that everyone can see, hear and participate. If the workshop gets too big, Jay will schedule a second one.
Easy. Click here. You'll get a confirmation email within 24 hours.
Nope. There's no registration fee, no participation fee, no materials fee, no shipping and handling. Free means free.
If you're currently working on an essay, paper or report you might want to bring along the prompt. Definitely bring pencil (or pen) and paper or your computer for notetaking.
It depends on the interests of the participants. There may be some brainstorming and writing activities. You won't need to do any special preparation or research, though. Just bring along your pencil and paper or computer.
Jay is an author and humorist. You can read his unofficial biography here. On a more serious note, he is also a gifted writing teacher and college professor. He teaches screenwriting at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and film theory at Chapman University in Orange County, California (where learning to write critically about film is an important part of his courses).
At the high school level, Jay has taught creative writing and now conducts writing workshops for students and teachers in Los Angeles area schools. For the last few years has been working with college-bound students, helping them take the stress out of writing the SAT® essay.
He's frequently very funny in person.
There won't be time to critique individual work. Talk to Jay if you want to arrange an individual meeting. (Notice: Our lawyers insist we tell you that that individual meetings are not free. Jay needs the money. To pay the lawyers.)
